Westleaf Staff

What's up Leafers? Welcome to the latest edition of On the Rise where we interview upcoming hip hop talent. Today's guest is artist, J-Easy. J-Easy is straight out of Columbus, Georgia. His sound is barsy and super hip hop similar to Asher Roth and Easy E. We can definitely see J selling out shows on major stages. The Columbus based MC has been on our radar for a while so we had to tap in with him! Check out the interview below.

Westleaf Staff: What's up, J? Your sound is dope. When did you start making music?

J-Easy: I started making music back in 2009 off my old iMac. Didn’t really get into it professionally until 2014-15.

Westleaf Staff: That's dope! What city do you represent?

J-Easy: Columbus, Georgia, born and raised!

Westleaf Staff: Shout out to Columbus. So how did you create your stage name?

J-Easy: I get a lot of hate for my name just because of “G-Eazy” but my name came pretty simple and it just kind of stuck. My first name is Justin and when I started rapping I had the slow flow of Eazy-E and my friends would joke with “J-Easy”. I’m in no way trying to replicate G-Eazy I’m my own artist no matter what my name is.

Westleaf Staff: That's a dope name. And you are still a unique person. Forget the haters! So how did your early life shape your interest in music?

J-Easy: When I was a kid I was always into music, even being a small child I would walk around the house singing (country music at the time) and it was kinda just a thing with me. Then when I got older and discovered rock and Hiphop is where things changed.

Westleaf Staff: Dope! Music runs through your veins. So who is your biggest Musical influence?

J-Easy: My biggest influence would be Eminem. I know it’s a cliche thing to say but my inspiration comes from him when doing Hiphop. I have many artist that I love and even would put above him in the game. Just his music really set the tone for me that I could actually have a chance to do this.

Westleaf Staff: Dope choice! Em is a legend. What's been the defining moment in your music career thus far?

J-Easy: At this moment I would say winning the Most Underrated Male Artist at the Tri City Entertainment awards would be my most defining moment, not saying I have a few more but definitely is on the top of the list. This would be my first award for anything in my city.

Westleaf Staff: That's dope! Congrats on the award! So what makes you a unique artist?

J-Easy: I’m unique in my personality. I love to encourage other artists to go farther. I want to show that a normal person can still do what they love if they can just get over what others would say. My whole life everyone looked down on me doing music like it was a joke. So being able to be the voice for people that want to do this feels amazing.

Westleaf Staff: Dope! So what does art mean to you?

J-Easy: Art means something you enjoy. I got songs that I personally love but others don’t. It’s all about perception of what you like. All art is different and not one are the same.

Westleaf Staff: True! That's deep! Where do you see your music career going over the next few years?

J-Easy: In the next few years I can see myself having a solid fan base and selling shows. I don’t have super high hopes but I see being very successful as an independent artist!

Westleaf Staff: I wish you much success! Before we go, describe music in three words.

J-Easy: What saved me.
