Westleaf Staff: What is your name and where are you located?
Wagen: My name is Jerome Wagen, i live in Patong, Phuket, Thailand.
Westleaf Staff: How did you become interested in the cannabis industry?
I was growing weed since the late 90s in Europe, always loved to smoke ganja and had aa huge personal affiliation with the plant. In 2022 Thailand legalized cannabis so I re-designed my restaurant into a dispensary. The Phuket Cannabis Shop opened its doors in June 2022 and was Patongs first dispensary.
Westleaf Staff: Where did the inspiration for your product or service come from?
Wagen: Having clean and proper cured weed at our dispensary is the most important thing for us. So we know what we sell to our clients is only premium quality, no bs. I am a huge weed lover since my teenage years, and now its time to educate the people in Thailand about this magical plant.
Westleaf Staff: Describe the challenges that you faced while starting your business?
Wagen: Finding experienced staff for our dispensary in Phuket was very difficult, as the cannabis industry is a new thing here in Thailand. We had to teach our staff how to do pre-rolled joints, let them try different sativas, hybrids, and indicas so they notice the different effects of each strain. Basically we had to start from scratch. Now we are super proud of our team!
Westleaf Staff: Do you believe cannabis will become federally legal in the near future?
Wagen: Thailand decriminalized Cannabis in June 2022.
Westleaf Staff: Have you taken advantage of any local programs for cannabis entrepreneurs?
Wagen: At this point there aren't any local programs for cannabis entrepreneurs, as the industry is brand-new. But we are very open to join such programs, once they are available.
Westleaf Staff: Do you consume cannabis or is it strictly business?
Wagen: I smoke weed everyday all day ☺
Westleaf Staff: What is your flagship product?
Wagen: Our best-seller is the exotic-grade Amnesia Haze, which is super fruity, uplifting and extremely smooth to smoke. Iceolator aka Bubblehash is also very popular amongst our customers.
Westleaf Staff: Where do you see your company five years from now?
Wagen: As things can change very quickly in Thailand, we hope we still will be able to run our dispensary. Having our own weed strains is for sure on the map, as well as in-house produced smoking products such as blunts or bongs. We already sell locally handmade Bamboo and coconut bongs, which are super nice and an absolute eye-catcher.
Westleaf Staff: Describe the most interesting story that you have as a cannabis entrepreneur.
Waagen: A customer walked into the shop, introduced himself as a 78 year old gentleman from India and asked us:
“I smoked my first joint 36 years ago while visiting Amsterdam, now I would like to smoke my second one, am I in the right place?”
Of course we rolled a beautiful joint for this gentleman and offered him a coffee, so we could have a little conversation. It was a beautiful meeting.
Westleaaf Staff: What is your advice for future cannabis entrepreneurs?
Wagen: Do your homework and most importantly get used to the Thai lifestyle. Things run differently here than they do in Europe or north America. But it is definitely heaven on earth, having a spliff while relaxing on the worls most beautiful beaches, sipping a fresh coconut.
