LONDON RAPPER LIL MURKY IS ON THE RISE

Westleaf Staff

What's up Leafers? Welcome to the latest edition of On the Rise where we interview upcoming hip hop talent. Today's guest is artist, Lill Murky. Murky is an MC straight out of London, England. His style is melodic and dreamy similar to Uzi or Juice WRLD. We can definitely see him performing on stages such as Rolling Loud or Coachella. The London based MC has been on our radar for a while so we had to tap in with him! Check out the interview below.

Westleaf Staff: What's up, Murky? Your sound is dope. When did you start making music?

Lil Murky: October of last year. I dropped my first ever song this month by the name of paradise on the 22nd of October 2021.

Westleaf Staff: That's dope! What city do you represent?

Lil Murky: London.

Westleaf Staff: Shout out to London. So how did you create your stage name?

Lil Murky: Before I was a melodic rapper or singer I was writing raps like I said earlier and I wrote to some drill beats so I would always say “I’d murk the beats” and Lil was a popular thing you hear in names so I put it together for “Lil Murky”. I also love the word murky.

Westleaf Staff: That's a dope name. Super creative! So how did your early life shape your interest in music?

Lill Murky: Back in primary school, which is elementary school for Americans, I can only remember being taught how to play the recorder, violin, piano, and trumpet. My dad would also play and teach me a load about Eminem and play bands such as the Beatles and the Oasis. I was probably about 10 when I got a drum kit for my birthday so I have a history with instruments.

Secondary school or High school for Americans, I was a pure song writer. I was just writing raps during lessons and there was an after school club for it which I did for a year.

Westleaf Staff: Dope! That's an inspiring story. So who is your biggest Musical influence?

Lil Murky: My biggest influence would be Juice WRLD. His freestyle ability and his pure ability to make music is why I love his music. His versatility and his way of putting his feelings into a song are also things I like about him.

Westleaf Staff: Dope choice! We love Juice! What's been the defining moment in your music career thus far?

Lill Murky: Being able to reach 10k monthly listeners when I first dropped my first EP and seeing momentum push as people wanted me on their songs and my Instagram and TikTok growing. Hopefully I find a bigger and better moment soon.

Westleaf Staff: That's dope! Congrats on those listeners. So what makes you a unique artist?

Lil Murky: My voice would be an obvious answer as no one would sound the same as me. But I would say that I don’t think many make a style like me in the UK and I’ve attempted so many genres so that has to make me stand out.

Westleaf Staff: Dope! So what does art mean to you?

Lil Murky: It's Beautiful to look back on it and say that I made a song 'cause even after I die one day it should reach my grand kids and so on.

Westleaf Staff: True! That's deep! Where do you see your music career going over the next few years?

Lil Murky: I never like to look forward 'cause I live in the now and those “few years” I may never get them. You never know cause life isn’t promised. One thing I do hope so is that I’m doing better than I was...know that’s the goal.

Westleaf Staff: I wish you much success! Before we go, describe music in three words.

Lil Murky: Melody, Flow, Lyrics.
