What's up Leafers? Welcome to the latest edition of On the Rise where we interview upcoming hip hop talent. Today's guest is rapper, Z1G. Z1G represents Galveston, Texas and his gritty melodic bars paint a vivid picture of his Texas lifestyle. Z1G's been gaining buzz in his town so we had to tap in with him! Check out the interview below.

Westleaf Staff: What's up, Z1G? Your style is dope. When did you start making music?

Z1G: I started writing music when I was in the 7th grade but I didn’t actually start recording music until 2 years ago.

Westleaf Staff: That's dope! What city do you represent?

Z1G: I represent Galveston Texas 409 the island.

Westleaf Staff: Shout out to the island. So how did you create your stage name?

Z1G: So it was my freshman year of high school and I was on the football team and my coach at the time was struggling with my last name so he just called me Zig for short so after that it juts stuck and when I started rapping I replaced the I with a 1 because there’s only 1 of me, there's only 1 Z1G.

Westleaf Staff: I think it's dope that your name pays homage to who you are. So how did your early life shape your interest in music?

Z1G: For as long as I could remember I’ve always been around music , especially in the Mexican culture music has always been apart of our everyday life. From my momma blasting Selena every Saturday to hearing Spm and Dj screw throughout the city , it’s like a form of therapy in a sense to where I can block everyone out and just be in my zone.

Westleaf Staff: Music is in your veins. Salute! So who is your biggest Musical influence?

Z1G: My biggest influence in music would have to be J Cole. i used to have all his cds as a kid and the way he tells stories in his song and finesse his way through beats is something I've always wanted to do.

Westleaf Staff: Dope! Cole is a legend! What's been the defining moment in your music career thus far?

Z1G: I feel like I haven’t actually had a defining moment yet. I’m not saying all the moments I have had now haven’t been great but I just feel like I still have a lot of things to accomplish before I can truly have a defining moment.

Westleaf Staff: So cool! Salute for that honesty So what makes you a unique artist?

Z1G: My versatility as an artist is what I believe makes me more unique than everyone else , and plus I’m a Mexican rapper from a small town in Texas. Can’t get more unique than that.

Westleaf Staff: Dope! That's unique. Much respect. So what does art mean to you?

Z1G: I believe art is the best and most pure way to really express a person's emotions and feelings in any shape or form.

Westleaf Staff: That's deep! Where do you see your music career going over the next few years?

Z1G: I can only see it go up from here. I already know what the bottom feels like only up from here.

Westleaf Staff: I wish you much success this year! Before we go, describe music in three words.

Z1G: Therapeutic , raw , limitless.
