What's up Leafers? Welcome to the latest edition of On the Rise where we interview upcoming hip hop talent. Today's guest is rapper, Cutthroat J. J reps Atlanta, Georgia. and his smooth bars paint a vivid picture of his urban reality. J's been been on our radar for a while so we had to tap in with him! Check out the interview below.

Westleaf Staff: What's up, J? Your sound is dope. When did you start making music?

Cutthroat J: I been messing around the studio since 2020 but I’ve been taking it serious since the beginning of 2021. In 2022,I spent the year building really learning the business, how to write better songs, building relationships.

Westleaf Staff: That's dope! What city do you represent?

Cutthroat J: Atlanta, Georgia.

Westleaf Staff: Shout out to Atlanta. Y'all have a lot of talent. So how did you create your stage name?

Cuthroat J: My nickname mayhem when boxing but this older cat was crying bout the name he was a stain though so I let him keep it. Cutthroat was my name in the gym after I gave it to him. When I started rappin' I just added the Jay. It’s homage to my pops, Hov, and MJG.

Westleaf Staff: I love that. I think it's dope that your name comes from your life experience. So how did your early life shape your interest in music?

Cutthroat J: Growing up in Atlanta the music was everywhere. I was staying with my dad and he was doing his thing. I was around what he was around until I had to move with my mom it was just us, you know? He used to drop me off at the studio and the guys would watch me while he’d be away. I guess it all came full circle.

Westleaf Staff: That's a dope introduction to music. So who is your biggest Musical influence?

Cutthroat J: Man….Trouble or 50 cent.

Boosie. 2-Chainz. Ye. Jay-z. MJG. Juicy J.

Westleaf Staff: Dope! Those are some legends. What's been the defining moment in your music career thus far?

Cutthroat J: I feel like it’s too early to say.

Westleaf Staff: I respect that. So what makes you a unique artist?

Cutthroat J: My voice and how I sneak bars in my flow.

Westleaf Staff: Dope! So what does art mean to you?

Cutthroat J: It’s the only way we can remain on the earth after we leave. The realer the art ,the longer it will last.

Westleaf Staff: That's deep! Where do you see your music career going over the next few years?

Cutthroat J: Still majorly independent unless the check is mind blowing hahaha.

Westleaf Staff: I wish you much success this year! Before we go, describe music in three words.

Cutthroat J: Powerful. Spiritual. Fun.
