What's up Leafers? Welcome to the latest edition of On the Rise where we interview upcoming hip hop talent. Today's guest is rapper, Yumekou. Yumekou hails from Huntsville Alabama and his unique underground sound. paints a stunning visual of his lifestyle. We can definitely see him performing on major stages such as Coachella or Rolling Loud. The rising MC is making a buzz in his city so we had to tap in with him. Check out the interview below.


Westleaf Staff: What's up, Yumekou? Your sound is dope! When did you start making music?


Yumekou: I started making music like around 15 , I used to always play around with writing poems and songs but I didn’t start making music until I did a song with my cousin when I was 15.


Westleaf Staff: That's dope! What city do you represent?


Yumekou: Huntsville! 2023 best city to live in! I’m glad my city finally getting recognized, I love living here.


Westleaf Staff: Shout out to East Atlanta! There's hella talent there. So how did you create your stage name?


Yumekou: I love anime so I combined two Japanese word yume means dream and Kou means light.


Westleaf Staff: That's a dope name. It's super creative. So how did your early life shape your interest in music?


Yumekou: My family on my moma side always been musically inclined , I was always introduced to all different genres of music having my dad being from the islands , my mom in the church , my brother listening to trap music , my other brother listened to Kanye West , Kid Cudi , and my oldest brother loved r&b , and I watched a lot of anime.


Westleaf Staff: Dope! Shoutout to your fam! So who is your biggest Musical influence?


Yumekou: Lil B , Kanye West , Drake , Larry June , Ethereal.


Westleaf Staff: Dope! I feel that. What's been the defining moment in your music career thus far?


Yumekou: Without music I wouldn’t be a content creator , and biggest defining moment was doing daylyt online tour during Covid. He really inspired me to keep going!


Westleaf Staff: That's dope! So what makes you a unique artist?


Yumekou: I’m not afraid to make music I love , you will rarely see me doing the same thing , I genuinely love just making music , whatever i like and I just put it out there for the world.


Westleaf Staff: Dope! You're super unique. So what does art mean to you?


Yumekou: Art is fashion , it’s a form of expression that connects everyone , like fashion it’s just another way to express yourself to the world.


Westleaf Staff: That's deep! Where do you see your music career going over the next few years?


Yumekou: I want to stay underground and just have a bunch of loyal supporters, I want to be one of the first artists to show people aye you can make a living out of this without having to have millions of people , I want to make it cool to be a indie artist that can make music and enjoy life.
