What's up Leafers? Welcome to the latest edition of On the Rise where we interview upcoming hip hop talent. Today's guest is artist, La'Monte. Groove driven funk and soul elements, combined with modern drums help create his aesthetic. Additionally, he Is the frontman of the band @A Couple Mondays. A group started with locals in order to experiment with sound, blending different taste of genres, while maintaining foundations In hip-hop. The rising MC has been on our radar for a while so we had to tap in with him. Check out the interview below.
Westleaf Staff: What's up, La'Monte? Your music is dope! When did you start making music?
La' Monte: I started making music at about age 18.
Westleaf Staff: That's dope! What city do you represent?
La' Monte: I am a Philadelphia native.
Westleaf Staff: Shout out to PA! So how did you create your stage name?
La' Monte: I use my actual name because I feel people could relate to me being myself. I don’t like facades and fake personas so I just present myself as is.
Westleaf Staff: That's dope. So how did your early life shape your interest in music?
La' Monte: My dad would always ride around to the oldies aka real music, and I picked up on it. As I got older my taste In music reflected this and I would always become fascinated by the sounds.
Westleaf Staff: Cool! So who is your biggest Musical influence?
La' Monte: I would say it is a tie between Pharrell Williams and Michael Jackson.
Westleaf Staff: Dope! Those are some legends. That's a unique perspective. What's been the defining moment in your music career thus far?
La' Monte: When I wanted to stop music but someone messaged me on Instagram saying they wanted me to win so I kept going. Making a real connection with people is the best feeling.
Westleaf Staff: That's dope! Congrats on that. connection. So what makes you a unique artist?
La' Monte: I produce myself as well as play all my instruments. I don’t like to sample, I like to make meaningful music from a thought or feeling that is my own.
Westleaf Staff: Dope! You're super talented! So what does art mean to you?
La' Monte: Art is a reflection of life, whichever canvas a person will choose to convey this message is up to them.
Westleaf Staff: That's deep! Where do you see your music career going over the next few years?
La' Monte: I see my music reaching a broader audience of people who are into real music. I also see myself doing shows and touring.
