Westleaf Staff

What's up Leafers? Welcome to the latest edition of On the Rise where we interview upcoming hip hop talent. Today's guest is artist, Troue. Troue is an MC straight out of Minnesota by way of Africa. His style is barsy similar to the east coast greats of the 90s era. We can definitely see him performing on stages such as Rolling Loud or Coachella. The Minnesota based MC has been on our radar for a while so we had to tap in with him! Check out the interview below.
Westleaf Staff: What's up, Troue? Your sound is dope. When did you start making music?
Troue: I was always interested in music as a kid, I started making beats around the age of 12, but I didn’t start rapping until I was 15. I would always freestyle around my group of friends but I never recorded anything, until one of my close friends said why not drop a tape; because I could obviously freestyle pretty well and I could flow on my beats and that’s how I got here.
Westleaf Staff: That's dope! What city do you represent?
Troue: I represent the Minnesota Twin city’s.
Westleaf Staff: Shout out to Minnesota. So how did you create your stage name?
Troue: I came up with my name because I like the name True but I wanted to change it. There was another artist named that so I went with Troue instead.
Westleaf Staff: That's a dope name. And it came naturally! So how did your early life shape your interest in music?
Troue: I had a different upbringing than most, I grew up in a very impoverished part of Africa and their was a lot of pain and suffering. It was in your face and that was kinda hard to understand as a kid but I was lucky enough to have a loving family and a roof over my head. When I moved to the U.S. I was eight years old and I started getting into hiphop because it painted everything I seen and experience so well.
Westleaf Staff: Dope! That's an inspiring story. So who is your biggest Musical influence?
Troue: My biggest influences would be Biggie, I just love everything about his style from his instrumentals to his word play.
Westleaf Staff: Dope choice! We love Biggie! What's been the defining moment in your music career thus far?
Troue: Being able to have people that listen to me all over the country and relate to what I’m saying.
Westleaf Staff: That's dope! Congrats on those listeners. So what makes you a unique artist?
Troue: What makes me unique is that I rap and make music that’s different from everything that's being made in today's music industry, I make music that defines me not the other way around. Plus I can change flows and go on any kinda beat.
Westleaf Staff: Dope! So what does art mean to you?
Troue: Art is what can be created by one person, but has so many meanings to others.
Westleaf Staff: True! That's deep! Where do you see your music career going over the next few years?
Troue: I want to grow even more as an artist and be able to influence the younger generation that anything is possible and to chase your dreams.
Westleaf Staff: I wish you much success! Before we go, describe music in three words.
Troue: Powerful. Rejuvenating. Universal.
