The Westleaf

What's up Leafers? Welcome to the latest edition of On the Rise where we interview upcoming hip hop talent. Today's guest is rap artist, Prentice. Prentice is straight out of Las Vegas, Nevada. His style is mellow and vibey with mass crossover appeal. It's clear when listening to Prentice that he's destined to make his mark on the rap game. We can definitely see him performing at festivals such as Coachella or Rolling Loud. Prentice's been making waves in Las Vegas with his sound so we had to tap in with him. Check out the interview below.

Westleaf Staff: What's up, Prentice? Your sound is dope. When did you start making music?

Prentice: 1996 I started making music.

Westleaf Staff: Salute. What city do you represent?

Prentice: Las Vegas 'cause thats where I been residing for the last 12 years it has become home now but I'm originally from Peoria Illinois.

Westleaf Staff: Shout out to Vegas! Vegas is like the Mecca of talent. It has to be super inspiring to live there. So how did you create your stage name?

Prentice: My stage name is my actual real name. Prentice is a very rare unique name in itself and so am I.

Westleaf Staff: Nice. I love that you're using your real name. It's definitely powerful. So how did your early life shape your interest in music?

Prentice: Like most families, my family was a bit dysfunctional and I saw and went through a lot of growing up as a child. The challenges that I faced in my early life compelled me to turn to writing poetry and then later music as an outlet to better help me deal with the problems in my family.

Westleaf Staff: Music has always been a positive outlet. I'm glad that it helped you on your journey. So who is your biggest Musical influence?

Prentice: There's quite a few musical influences, too many to only list one. In the 90's it was 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Nas, Busta Rhymes, DMX, JadaKiss, and Scarface just to name a few.

Westleaf Staff: Nice. Those are some legends! Next question! What's been the defining moment in your music career thus far?

Prentice: Winning a rap competition called 4 Bar Friday hosted by Damian Lillard who also created the platform for underground artist. In August 2021 my single "Summer Vibez" hit #30 on the Veva Play Charts for 4 weeks.

Westleaf Staff: Wow! That's super dope. Congrats brother.

What makes you a unique artist?

Prentice: Im an artist who wears many hats. Im not just a rapper, I write, produce, sing, and have the ability to do my own graphics for my music artwork. At any given moment when necessary my flow can switch from a steady tempo to a much faster tongue twisting flow. I'm versatile and I usually transition from rapping to harmonizing, giving my listeners the best of both worlds.

Westleaf Staff: Nice! You're super talented! So what does art mean to you?

Prentice: It means a lot. Art can communicate information, shape our everyday lives, and make a social statement. Through my creative talent it allows me to translate something so special that effects other people's emotions.

Westleaf Staff: Facts. I love that definition! Where do you see your music career going over the next few years?

Prentice: I see my music career taking off in just a few more years. I believe my music will become bigger than myself touching millions of people in a good way.

Westleaf Staff: I can see that happening for you. It's already done! Before we go, describe music in three words.

Prentice: Beautiful, Spiritual, and Heart-Felt.
