What's up Leafers? Welcome to the latest edition of On the Rise where we interview upcoming hip hop and R&B talent. Today's guest is The Samhain Hot straight out of Brooklyn, New York. The rising artist is making moves in his city so we had to tap in. Checkout the interview below!
Westleaf Staff: What's up Samhain? When did you start making music?
The Samhain Hot: I started making music when I was like 7-8 with my uncle in the house and then I remember going to an actual studio around 13 years old . My grandmother use to pay and I took the bus over there and made a few cassette tapes.
Westleaf Staff: Nice! So how did your early life shape your interest in music?
The Samhain Hot: Well seeing my uncle singing and recording . Seeing he had a book of songs . I used to look through it and see “ohhh so you have to write the songs ..” and then of course there was Michael Jackson. I think I seen that “Moonwalker” video tape and after that it was on!
Westleaf Staff: That's dope. Shoutout to your Uncle! What city do you represent?
The Samhain Hot: Canarsie Brooklyn, New York City
Westleaf Staff: Brooklyn stand up! So how did you create your stage name?
The Samhain Hot: I originally got it from watching Halloween movies as a kid but I’m not even glorifying that style no more. So it’s an acronym “Sound Art Music Higher-up Aroma Intense Noise”
Westleaf Staff: That's dope. So who is your biggest Musical influence?
The Samhain Hot: That is Michael Jackson hands down. I collected all those albums since I was a kid .CDs & Tapes. Today the collection got even bigger . I have The Jackson’s, The Jackson 5 albums. Solo albums from the brothers in my collection etc.
Westleaf Staff: That's dope! Got to love a great Mike. What's been the defining moment in your music career thus far?
The Samhain Hot: Well if i had the technology we have now back then I would probably have had a defining moment in my music career . I can say that winning the contest in high school for a written song to be placed in the year book. I didn’t even know it was a contest at first . I thought it was who ever writes the song first so I wrote in the same class it was announced. But in the end I still won. They called me to the office and said we like what you have and we are gonna go with you . They even let me look at some of the other raps written by other students.
Westleaf Staff: That's real! So what does art mean to you?
The Samhain Hot: Art to me is Music …some type of creation coming from within my soul. I can hear the songs in my head . I haven't wrote down anything for these past years it just comes comes out better making it up as I record.
Westleaf Staff: Dope! Where do you see your music career going over the next few years?
The Samain Hot: Well I don’t really see anything but I want to see some traction and grow my social media following.
Westleaf Staff: Facts! You got this! So what makes you a unique artist?
The Samhain Hot: Well I guess when you listen to the albums I produced for myself you will hear me blending all music genres. Of course today rapping and singing at the same time is normal . But back then it was mostly Bone Thugs n Harmony . But I also have Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, Rock, etc.
Westleaf Staff: That's super dope. Before we go, describe music in three words.
The Samhain Hot: Powerful. Life. God.
